Love like the sun

Sunday I taught a Bible class and one of the things we discussed was how do we love our neighbors as ourselves? This is a hard lesson to learn because no matter how much we work at it we are never quite there. As humans our tendency is to first look out for our own good and if there is time, and potentially if it’s to our advantage, we’ll think about someone else.

When Jesus was asked by an expert in the law which was the greatest command he answered: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ … The second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matt. 22:36-39)

This kind of love is patient, kind, does not envy, and is not self-seeking. (I Cor. 13:4) It is tested and refined by time. Here’s a quote I found that fit well with this topic:

Even after all this time

The sun never says to the earth “you owe me”.

Look what happens with a Love like that!

- It lights the whole Sky.

May our love for our neighbor renew itself each day.

C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity says:

“If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at heaven and you get earth thrown in; aim at earth and you get neither.”
