It is told that Rabbi Akiba (ca.50–ca.135 AD) was journeying along the Sea of Galilee headed towards his home town of Capernaum. However, he made a wrong turn and found himself before a small Roman fortress and was greeted by the thundering voice of a sentry who said, “Who are you? What are you doing here?” Akiba replied, “What do you get paid for asking me these questions?” The soldier paused to think about this question and said, “Three drachma per week.” Akiba responded, “I’ll pay you double to stand outside my door and ask me those same questions every morning.”
What would your response be to the questions posed by the sentry?
“Who are you? What are you doing here?”
